Hiking and Cycling

The Bretaye area is a great place to start a high altitude walk, walking around Lac Noir takes about an hour, you can take the train there or home if you don't want to climb the entire mountain. Alternatively there are marked routes starting from right outside the chalet that wind through the forest to Villars with waterfalls and stunning views. If you want to go further you can traverse the peaks from village to village either across to Gryon or down the mountin to Aigle. There are also plenty of options for biking, either mountain biking, downhill or even electric! The local sports store Mc Board can provide rentals and suggested routes.

Food and Wine

Switzerland is well known for cheese but much less so for wine yet the foothills below Villars are covered with vineyards that have been making wine for over a century. The most common varieties used are Chasselas for the whites and Pinot Noir and Gamay for the reds. The grocery shops have a good selection of local wine but for an informed selection you can buy from the Ollon vinicole on the drive up to the chalet. Many growers provide tasting tours including at Chateau Aigle, for more ideas try Chablais wine growers. If you visit the Bex salt mine you will see the storage area at the entrance to the caves where wine is left to age. There are plenty of restaurants locally providing traditional mountain favorites such as fondue and rosti, here is a list of local restaurants

Golf course

Villars golf course is at 1600m, a short drive away (see route to Golf Course) where you can experience mountain views of Les Chaux and Mont Blanc as a day visitor. There are more course details with videos of each hole at golf course flyover. There are other golf courses in the area such as Crans Montana, Sion and Lavaux. If you would like to have a tour with a small group and driver, let me know and I can help make arrangements.

Castles of Chillon and Aigle

There are two castles in the local area, at Chateau Aigle visitors can sample wine from the vineyard and tour the wine museum whilst Chateau Chillon has a wealth of history stretching over 1000 years. Chillon is directly on the bank of lake Geneva near Montreux where boat rides are also available in the summer. Montreux also boasts a Jazz festival in July and music festival in September that includes a Freddie Mercury memorial day.
